Wise Home Show – Episode 22
The March 2024 episode is available. Jeff talks about how he has seen Private Equity purchase local HVAC companies and they are focused on quantity and quality is suffering. Two jobs he has seen with either poor work or just plain fraud. This is harming the industry. Jeff discusses how he would run NY state efficiency programs.
- Require all pictures to be geotagged, date stamped and uploaded to the funding program.
- Require blower doors or perform more QA when contractors skip blower door testing.
- Reward contractors & clients for downsizing HVAC size with a bonus.
- Ban single stage equipment in all programs as they are already oversizing equipment.
- Review usage 12 months after install and give Actual Performance Bonus to contractors delivering actual results. This will motivate poor performing companies.

The December 2023 episode is available. Jeff talks about a 1990 built home that was recently upgraded by a large contractor. The install has some deficiencies and the HVAC system that was installed is probably oversized. This highlights the importance of contractors documenting their inspections and work with timestamped and geolocation pictures, so a record is made of existing conditions and the upgrade process.
